First, check five warning signs
The most important warning signs are a suspiciously low price, a new or empty account, pressure to make a prepayment and an attempt to move the conversation outside OLX. The risk also increases when the seller offers shipping only and has no other listings.
Before paying, check six elements:
- A new or empty account. A short history and lack of ratings make it harder to assess the seller.
- A suspiciously low price. A large difference compared with similar offers may indicate a problem with the item or an attempt to quickly extort money.
- A request for prepayment. Be especially cautious about paying into an account when the seller refuses to allow personal collection or a secure form of transaction.
- Contact outside OLX. Moving the conversation to WhatsApp, text message or email removes some of the context and makes it easier to send a fake link.
- Shipping only. The lack of personal collection does not prove a scam, but together with other signals it should increase caution.
- No other listings. A single random listing may be normal, but combined with a new account and a low price, it requires more careful checking.
No single signal confirms a scam. Several signals at once are a reason not to pay under pressure and to check the offer before continuing the conversation.
How to assess the seller’s account and offer
An account that has been active for longer, good ratings and consistent listings are positive signals. Check whether the descriptions, photos and location fit together and whether the seller offers items from a similar category.
The account history helps assess credibility, but it does not guarantee safety. A scammer may use a hijacked account, while an honest seller may have a new account without ratings. Therefore, assess the complete set of information rather than just the date when the profile was created.
Compare the description with the photographs. Look for missing details, photos copied from other listings and assurances that do not match the condition of the item. For an expensive product, ask for an additional photo of a specific element, such as the serial number or accessories shown in the listing. However, do not share your login details or authentication codes.
The price also requires comparison. Check several similar listings and consider the model, condition, completeness of the set, warranty and location. A price lower than other offers may result from damage, an urgent sale or missing items in the set. If the seller cannot explain this consistently, do not make the payment.
What should raise concerns in the conversation
Time pressure is intended to make you act without checking the offer. Messages such as “first come, first served”, “pay now because I’ll give it to someone else in a moment” or “I don’t have time for additional questions” are warning signs.
A request for prepayment requires particular caution. The seller may have a valid reason to expect payment before shipping, but the buyer should know the transaction terms and be able to verify the offer. Do not send money just because the seller claims that payment is necessary to reserve the item.
Keep the conversation on OLX. Moving it to WhatsApp, text message or email is often used to send a page impersonating the service, a courier company or a payment system. Outside the platform, it is also harder to recreate the full context of the listing and messages.
Do not provide a BLIK code, card details, login, password or code from an authentication message. An OLX, bank or courier company employee should not require such information in a conversation with the seller.
The most common OLX scams before payment
A fake courier link leads to a page that asks for card details, bank login credentials or a fee to receive money. A request for a BLIK code may allow the scammer to withdraw funds or pay for a transaction using someone else’s code. A link to supposedly OLX Pay sent in the chat may lead to a fake form rather than an official payment page. More examples are described in the article Suspiciously Cheap Listing — Is It a Scam?.
Do not click a link just because it contains the name OLX, a bank or a courier company. Check the transaction in the official service by entering the address yourself or using a feature available after logging in.
What to do before buying when an offer raises doubts
Follow a consistent order:
- Compare the price with similar listings and check whether the seller explains the difference.
- Check the account history, ratings, other listings, photos and the consistency of the description.
- Ask questions in OLX messages and keep the entire conversation on the platform.
- Choose a transaction method that can be verified, such as personal collection after checking the item, if possible.
- Do not click payment links received in a message and do not provide BLIK codes or login details.
- Walk away if the seller pressures you to pay quickly, refuses to answer or changes the arrangements at the last minute.
When collecting an item in person, check it before paying. With shipping, make sure you understand the payment, delivery and possible return rules. A conversation conducted calmly and matter-of-factly does not confirm the seller’s honesty, but pressure, inconsistent answers and a demand for an unusual payment should prompt you to walk away.
When Łowca is not needed
Łowca may not be needed for one specific offer if personal collection is possible and there is time to check the seller, the item and the transaction terms yourself. In that case, OLX features, a conversation on the platform and careful verification before payment are sufficient.
An additional tool may be useful when you are still looking for a product, want to compare listings from several services or do not have time to check new offers manually. Using Łowca does not replace assessing the seller or conducting the transaction safely.
How Łowca shows risk signals for OLX offers
Łowca searches OLX, Otomoto, Otomoto (parts), Allegro Lokalnie, Vinted, Otodom and Sprzedajemy. For offers, it shows signals concerning the seller, marks suspiciously cheap offers and moves offers with elevated risk to a separate “check carefully” section. These are prompts for further verification, not certain identification of a scam.
The Investigate feature allows you to check a selected offer from the results in more detail. Łowca may help narrow down the list of offers and draw attention to warning signs, but it does not guarantee detection of every scam or the seller’s honesty. The service operates on the Polish market, is not owned by OLX and is not affiliated with it.
Frequently asked questions
How can I spot an OLX scammer?
Look for a suspiciously low price, a new or empty account, a request for prepayment, pressure to make a quick decision, contact outside OLX, shipping only and no other listings. Several such signals at once are a reason not to pay and to check the offer carefully.
Can a seller ask for prepayment?
A seller may expect payment before shipping, but prepayment increases the buyer’s risk. Do not send money if the seller applies pressure, refuses to answer questions or sends an unusual payment link.
Why do scammers move conversations to WhatsApp?
Moving a conversation to WhatsApp, text message or email makes it easier to send a fake link and separates the conversation from the context of the OLX listing. It is also harder to verify previous arrangements outside the platform.
Does a new OLX account always mean a scam?
A new OLX account does not always mean a scam, because an honest seller may also be starting to use the service. However, a new account is an important warning sign, especially when combined with a low price, no other listings or a request for prepayment.
How can I check whether an OLX offer is suspiciously cheap?
Compare the price with similar listings and consider the model, condition, completeness of the set, warranty and location. Ask for an explanation of the difference and check whether the description, photos and account history are consistent.
Is a payment link sent by the seller safe?
A payment link sent by the seller may lead to a fake page impersonating OLX, a bank or a courier company. Do not provide card details, your login, password or BLIK code through such a link; check the transaction in the official service.
